NDA Pattern

The NDA (National Defence Academy) exam is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) twice a year for admission to the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. The NDA exam pattern comprises two stages – a written examination and an interview/Personality Test. Here are the details of the NDA exam pattern:

Written Examination -

  • The written examination consists of two papers – Mathematics and General Ability Test (GAT).
  • Both papers are of objective type and conducted on the same day.
  • The Mathematics paper carries 300 marks, and the General Ability Test paper carries 600 marks.
  • The total duration of the written examination is 5 hours (2.5 hours for each paper).
  • The questions will be in English and Hindi, except for the English language section in the GAT paper.

1. Mathematics Paper

  • The Mathematics paper consists of 120 objective type questions.
  • The paper covers topics such as algebra, trigonometry, calculus, and geometry.
  • The paper is of 2.5 hours duration and carries 300 marks.
  • There will be negative marking for incorrect answers.

2. General Ability Test (GAT) Paper

  • The GAT paper consists of two sections – English language and General Knowledge.
  • The paper covers topics such as physics, chemistry, history, geography, and current events.
  • The paper is of 2.5 hours duration and carries 600 marks.
  • There will be negative marking for incorrect answers.

Interview/Personality Test -

Candidates who qualify in the written examination will be called for an interview/personality test conducted by the Services Selection Board (SSB). The SSB interview consists of various tests, including intelligence tests, group tasks, and personal interviews.
The interview/personality test is conducted for a total of 900 marks.
The final selection of candidates is based on their performance in both the written examination and the interview/personality test. The NDA exam pattern may be subject to change, and candidates are advised to keep themselves updated with the official website of the UPSC.
